The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) treats the Pygmy Sloth as a "Flagship Species" through their EDGE of Existence program, which focuses on animals that are both Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered.

Population Monitoring: They lead the most consistent scientific census of the island, using radio collars and GPS backpacks to track sloth movement between mangroves and inland forests.

Capacity Building: They don't just send outsiders; they train and fund Panamanian conservationists (like world-renowned expert Dr. Diorene Smith) to lead the research locally.

Government Policy: ZSL works directly with the Panamanian government and indigenous authorities to create a formal "Management Plan" for Isla Escudo de Veraguas, ensuring the island remains a protected sanctuary.
