The dual purpose of the Spring into Wellness Challenge is 1) to encourage our community to more healthy outdoor activity and exercise and 2) to raise funds for healthy food in our schools. All donations to the 2021 Spring into Wellness Challenge will support the garden and kitchen programs in our Jefferson County Schools as well as at Emburis Pre & Primary School - our sister school in Monduli, Tanzania. The Community Wellness Project (CWP) began in 2007 to address health and nutrition issues in Jefferson County schools. Our initial target area was the Chimacum School District and our work has included creating and maintaining school gardens, helping food service procure local organic food and equipment needed to process that food, and working with educators to enhance the curriculum with agriculture, nutrition, and culinary programs. Since then our mission has expanded and we are now looking to support all of our Jefferson County school districts. WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED
Updated Wellness Policy for CSD #49, including the policy framework for Farm to School and School Garden programs
Created a Farm to School sub-committee of Chimacum’s Wellness Advisory Committee
Procured equipment upgrades for Chimacum main kitchen in support of Farm to School
Sponsored training for Chimacum and Port Townsend Food Services staff in support of Farm to School implementation
Secured grant funding for new school gardens at Chimacum Creek Primary and Chimacum Elementary
Conducted School Garden pilot program with grades 3-5 at Chimacum Elementary, spring 2019
Secured funding and program support for an expanded CSD School Garden program, grades preschool through 6th grade, fall 2019
Seedwork Chimacum partnership, including funding for expanded food & farm Career & Technical Education at Chimacum High School, including:
FEED Lecture Series at CHS, (Food, Education & Enterprise Development)
FEED Food Truck purchase
