The James River Association (JRA) protects the James River and connects people to it. We work to realize a vision of a fully healthy James River, valued by all communities in the watershed. When the James River Association (JRA) was founded in 1976 the James River was considered one of the most polluted rivers in the country and today it is one of the most improved. Now entering its 50th anniversary in 2026, JRA remains the only organization solely dedicated to protecting and enhancing the James and the 25,000 miles of tributaries that flow from headwaters in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay.
