When the Virginia Credit Union River City Half or River City 5k reaches full capacity, registration for that event will close and a Waiting List will open. Waiting List members will become notified of open spots as they become available. Once notified, you will have a set time frame to claim your spot and complete registration. The Waiting List will only be available through February 20 (while deferrals are still allowed).
Yes! At Sports Backers, our mission is to inspire people to live actively. Engaging underserved populations is one of our core values and one way we act on this value is by offering Income Based Rates for our events. These special rates are offered to those who qualify and would otherwise not be able to participate.
Those who qualify are eligible for a special registration rate for all Sports Backers events and training teams. The rate is event/training team specific. To learn more and apply please visit the Income Based Rate page.

Participants must be at least 12 years old for the Virginia Credit Union River City Half and 6 years old for the River City 5k.
No. Entry fees are non-refundable under all circumstances, including postponement, format changes, cancellation, or inability to participate. Race numbers and entries may not be transferred to another person. Anyone found participating with another person’s number will be disqualified, and both people will be barred from future Sports Backers events, including the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k and Allianz Richmond Marathon.
You may defer your registration from the 2027 Virginia Credit Union River City Half and River City 5k to the 2028 event. You may only defer to and from the same event: 2027 Half to 2028 Half or 2027 5k to 2028 5k. Deferred registrations may not be transferred to another person. Refunds will not be issued under any circumstances. No exceptions. The fee to defer a registration is $10 for the 5k and $20 for the half marathon through December 3 and then $20 for the 5k and $35 for the half marathon through February 20. All deferrals must be completed by February 20 and may be used only for the 2028 event. You may only defer an entry once (i.e., if you defer your 2026 entry to 2027, you will not be able to defer it again to 2028).

Yes, you may switch distances if the race distance you are switching to is not already sold out.
There will be no refunds and no transfer of entries from person to person. If going down in distance, Half to 5k, for a $10 distance switch fee. To go up in distance, 5k to Half, it's the $10 distance switch fee plus the difference in entry at the time of the switch. Transfers will be allowed until the event starts or until the event reaches capacity, whichever happens first. You will not receive a refund of any entry fees.
PLEASE NOTE: If you deferred your race entry from 2025 to 2026 and would like to switch distances email info@sportsbackers.org in order to complete the switch.
SWITCHING FROM THE HALF MARATHON TO 5K: You will owe the $10 distance switch fee. CLICK HERE and follow the prompts. Make sure to select “TRANSFER EVENT”.
SWITCHING FROM 5K TO HALF MARATHON: You will owe the $10 distance switch fee plus difference in entry fee at time of switch. For example, you registered for the 5K at $50 and are switching to the marathon at $110, you will owe $70 ($60 difference in entry fee + $10 switch fee). Please email info@sportsbackers.org to complete your transfer.
Yes, you may switch between the in-person to the virtual event of the same distance (i.e. in-person half for virtual half) for no fee. To begin the switch process, click here and follow the prompts. If you have any issues transfer, please email info@sportsbackers.org with your shipping address (packet mailing is included with your virtual registration).
Yes, you may switch between virtual to the in-person event of the same distance (i.e. virtual 5k for in-person 5k) by paying the difference in entry fee at the time of the switch. If you wish to transfer to the in-person event, please email info@sportsbackers.org, for more details.

Event Day
There is ample free parking available on the U of R campus. You will need to decide whether you prefer to park near the start line or finish festival area—they are located about 1/2 mile apart. View the Virginia Credit Union River City Half Start/Finish & Parking Map >
Yes, bag check is located at the Post Race Festival (about a 1/2 mile walk from the start line). Bag check will open at 6:30 AM. You are responsible for providing your own bag and you must attach the tear-off tag on your race bib to your bag.
