Description

Run with a donkey in the "Town Too Tough to Die!"  Please join us for the 3rd Annual Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash on Saturday, April 2, 2022!

MANDATORY
Runner must have personal donkey or have made arrangements for a donkey to register for this race.  Runners cannot participate in this race without a donkey (no other equine permitted).  Solo runners are NOT allowed to participate.  No riding allowed- this is an in hand trail race with a donkey.  Donkeys shall be in good health and sound condition.  Any runner mistreating their donkey will be disqualified.

RULES
This is a TEAM race with one runner and one donkey making a team.  Teams starting the race must remain a team throughout the race connected with a lead rope no longer than 15 feet.  DONKEY EXCHANGING NOT ALLOWED.  If the runner becomes separated from their donkey, (runner and donkey are no longer racing as a connected team) the team must return to the place they became separated before continuing the race. Failure to return to the point of separation WILL result in disqualification.  Teams cannot receive outside assistance from spectators, family, or friends.  Doing so may result in disqualification.  Registered runners may support and assist other teams while on the course.  The proper race etiquette is to ask before assisting another team.  The winning combination consists of the runner and donkey team to cross the finish line. The runner may be leading or following the donkey. The donkey's nose crossing the finish line first constitutes the winner.

COURSE
The courses are challenging and rocky.  Boots for donkeys are highly recommended, but not mandatory.

There are 3 distances: 3 mile intro (pack saddle not required), 6 mile short (pack saddle not required), and the Western Pack Burro Ass-ociation (WPBA) sanctioned 13 mile long course (pack saddle and traditional mining gear of gold pan, pick, and shovel required).  Courses will be marked by color.

3 Mile intro course YELLOW RIBBONS, 6 mile short BLUE RIBBONS, and 13 mile long ORANGE RIBBONS.  There will be water stations at the break off of the three courses. Water stations will be near the Charleston Road crossing for the 6 and 13 mile courses and at Monument Guest Ranch for 13 mile course. First aid supplies will be at each station with emergency crew on stand by.

HEALTH & WELFARE

We wish to make participants of this year’s Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash aware that there is currently an Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) outbreak occurring in Arizona, with related cases having been found in California.  EIA is a classic blood-borne infection which often remains asymptomatic in infected horses and donkeys.  Because it is often asymptomatic, the Arizona State Veterinarian strongly recommends all animals within the state of Arizona, but particularly from Maricopa County where the outbreak is currently centered, be tested for EIA at least yearly.  This test is commonly known as a “Coggins test.”

All donkeys traveling to the Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash from out of state, must have proof of a negative Coggins test, per the AZDA and USDA. It is strongly recommended animals from in state also have proof of a current, negative Coggins test.

As with any livestock exposition or event, it is strongly recommended that participants observe prudent biosecurity measures to ensure the health of their animals.
- Do not bring sick animals, animals afflicted with parasites, communicable, or unknown diseases or maladies, or their pasture/barn mates to the event.
- Do not share pens and corrals with animals from different locations.
- Do not share water buckets, tack, or grooming supplies with animals from different locations.
- Wash your hands after hand feeding or petting animals which are not your own.
- Properly dispose of manure and do not allow your animal to sniff or consume manure.
- Do not allow nose-to-nose contact between animals from different locations.

Thank you for prioritizing the health and safety of your animals, and we look forward to having another wonderful Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash!
