On average, 22 veterans take their own lives every day--that adds up to over 8,000 per year. By raising awareness in the community, we can better the lives of our veterans and reduce the stressors that can sometimes be too much to bear.
Drew Kostic was a U.S. Marine veteran who attended Northwestern Michigan College. He was a part of the Student Veterans of America (SVA) and was active in the community by performing outreach missions to raise awareness about veteran suicide. Even though he was aware of how and where to get help, Drew took his own life on December 18, 2016.
Veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) go through emotional instability and feelings of worthlessness, doubt, and what can feel like an endless cycle of treatment with no light at the end of the tunnel. There are many success stories about veterans who have conquered these internal battles, but there are still too many losing the fight.
This race was put together to continue raising awareness about veteran suicide. It is for veterans and the community to attend and gain more information on how they can help and support veterans in their communities. Join us for our annual DK5K to raise awareness and support our veteran heroes!
Run as one or gather up a team of 4. The DK5K is a 5K obstacle course run happening to raise awareness about veteran suicide. Plan on uneven terrain, water, mud, hills, and various obstacles.
