Although not unexpected, it is with great regret that we have decided to cancel the 2020 GNAR Kids Adventure Race. For eight years the GNAR has been a challenging and fun outdoor team event for kids and the most important and significant fundraiser for The Mountain Community School. The GNAR registration fees were advertised as nonrefundable, but we would like to extend the opportunity for you to either donate the funds to The Mountain Community School or request a refund. If you do not respond by April 30th at midnight, your payment will be donated to The Mountain Community School.
If you donate your registration fee to the school we will use the funds to help defray the additional costs of providing virtual classrooms and off-site instruction. We are committed to staying connected to all our students during these uncertain times and your donation will help make this possible. If you would prefer a refund, you will receive a check directly from The Mountain Community School. Because we are in a period of transition we ask that you give us 4-6 weeks to process your refund. We appreciate your patience.
Thank you for supporting our event and our school. We want to extend to both you and your family health and well-being over the next few months.
– The Mountain Community School
The 9th annual Gnarliest Kids Adventure Race (THE GNAR) offers kids (ages 5-14) and adults the opportunity to experience the thrill of adventure racing. Teams of two will work together to navigate a variety of challenges along our TOP SECRET course! Challenges may include mountain biking, running, a low ropes course, problem solving, water obstacles and down-and-dirty fun that will leave you smiling the whole way home.
The GNAR even has a costume contest! Pick out a clever name for your team and then come up with an awesome costume to match. If your fellow runners like your style enough, you just might win a prize! Either way, you'll be looking your best as you conquer everything the GNAR throws at you.
The GNAR benefits the many learning programs offered at The Mountain Community School including Learning Through Expeditions. Learning Through Expeditions is a project-based learning curriculum where students engage in interdisciplinary, in-depth study of compelling topics, in groups and in their community. Math, literature, science, and art are explored in each expedition and students showcase their work for family and peers.

The GNAR will begin with instructions and a safety briefing by the Race Director. Participants will be divided into two groups based on age (Child/Adult Teams, 10-14, 9 and under) and will start at set intervals. An awards ceremony will take place immediately following the race. Awards will be given in the competitive categories to the top overall teams. All participants will receive a finisher medal.
Registration is limited to the first 150 teams (300 participants). We anticipate this event will sell out early- ensure your space, sign-up today!
Friday, May 1st // 2:00—5:00 pm – Registration & Packet pick-up at the Mountain Community School, 613 Glover Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792 (map)
Please know your team name when you come to registration and packet pickup for easy pick up. We will give both team members’ bibs to one teammate, so whomever gets to packet pickup first will get both team members bibs, tees and goody bags.
Limited onsite registration will be available on a first come, first serve basis on Friday.
Race Day packet pickup and registration (if available) will be held inside the gym at the race hub starting at 12:00 PM.
Questions about registration or last minute adjustments to teams? Please come Friday to packet pickup to ask these questions and to make any changes to registration. If you cannot attend Friday's packet pickup please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
At this year's race, participants will have the option to purchase an Event Extras wristband ($5) that will grant them access to the waterfront (with water slide) and bounce house during the event. Lounge out by the water or fine tune your back flipping skills in the bounce house - it's up to you!
Each participant registered by April 19th at midnight will receive a gnarly shirt to commemorate their gnarliest run ever! After that date, shirts will be available in limited sizes + quantities for $10.
And, no matter when you register, all participants will receive these awesome finisher medals!
Volunteers make races happen, and we'd love for you to volunteer if you are not able to participate in this year’s event!
For more information, send an email to email@example.com
AWARDS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE TOP OVERALL TEAMS IN THE COMPETITIVE DIVISIONS IN THE FOLLOWING AGE GROUPS:
- 9-under aged teams
- 10-14 year-old teams
- Adult/child team
(Team Age Group determined by age of eldest teammate)
ALL COMPETITIVE AND NON-COMPETITIVE PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE A FINISHERS MEDAL.
The COMPETITIVE + NON-COMPETITIVE with BIKE categories are going to have a CHALLENGING bike component to it on uneven surfaces that cover rocky, "rooty", and hilly terrain. If your child is not comfortable on the bike or on technical trails, we would HIGHLY suggest that you register them in the either of the categories WITHOUT the bike.
All kids will receive a finisher medal regardless of competitive or non-competitive category!
Flat Rock Village Bakery will be back by popular demand this year! They'll be serving up hot pizza to go along with some great music from our professional DJ.
