Details

Ensure transition zone is safe and secure throughout setup, race, and break down. Athletes will have expensive gear and other personal belongings, so we must keep it all safe and secure

Transition Zone set-up & in / out coordinator High Priority

Details

Ensure transition zone is setup with appropriate room for all athletes gear and safe in / out. Set up should also ensure there is clear one-way entry and exit to keep all participants safe during transitions

Hydro-burpee head judge High Priority

Details

Ensure athletes are entering & exiting the water safely and correctly. Also ensure burpees are done correctly, with full submersion to get credit for reps. Most importantly, bring great energy and enthusiasm to ensure athletes are excited to get into that Puget Sound water!

Hydro-burpee course wayfinding volunteer Medium Priority

Details

Stand near main course foot path to ensure athletes head from the transition zone, and toward the beach correctly. Work in coordination with head judge, transition zone, and north end volunteers to ensure athletes stay on course.

North End #1 - beach to tunnel Medium Priority

Details

On footpath within the beach / Golden Garden's park, ensure athletes make the correct right turn, go past portable toilets, and through the tunnel (under train tracks) and head right toward stairs / North End #2 volunteer. work in coordination with hydro-burpee and North End #2 volunteer to keep athletes on track.

North End #2 - tunnel to stairs up Medium Priority

Details

As athletes head east, out of the tunnel, ensure they head south, up the short flight of stairs, and safely across the cross walk where Seaview PL NW and Golden Gardens DR NW connect at the hairpin turn. Once across the crosswalk, keep athletes on the sidewalk, heading southeast, until they reach the stair. there are 292 stairs up to the top at 85th and 32nd!

Bottom of "Road Closed" Medium Priority

2 main tasks: 1) inform athletes coming north on Burke Gilman of how to cross at intersection, heading west, to rejoin foot path, heading north toward transition zone. 2) interact with drivers / others wanting to understand road closure. Show permit if necessary & call Connor (event organizer) if any issues arise.

Top of "Road Closed" High Priority

in 2022's event, this proved to be most challenging volunteer spot with fishermen, dog park users, and others being frustrated and at times rude / aggressive with road closure. Primary responsibility is to keep bikers safe and aware of any cars coming down the road. Close second is helping drivers / others understand why the road is closed. How to proceed slowly / safely for bikes if residents / guests of residents. etc.

Top of stairs - way finding volunteer Medium Priority

Keep runners (loop 1), and loop 3 with ruck / weight vest, taking the right / south down 32nd once they reach you at the top of the 292 stairs, near intersection of 32nd and 85th. In between running loops, you can also assist to ensure bikers move down 32nd as they come up the windy road / closed road into the 85th and 32nd intersection

Keep bikers safe and on course. Also, safely interact with residents / guests of residents and any other drivers who may come on the closed road during the event.

77th & 32nd way finding volunteer Medium Priority

Details

Ensure athletes in all event loops, safely make the right turn, heading west on 77th, from going southbound on 32nd. Next, ensure athletes continue straight on 77th toward Sunset Hill Park, where they will then turn left, heading south on 34th.

77th & 34th way finding volunteer - Tim's spot Medium Priority

As athletes approach heading west on 77th, Ensure they safely take a left turn down 34th avenue at the north end Sunset Hill Park. Cheer athletes on, and ensure they know to continue south on 34th until they reach 65th, following rules of the road as they go. Reserved for a member of the Nygard family, as Tim served in this location in our inaugural event.

65th and 34th way finding volunteer Medium Priority

As athletes approach heading south on 34th, ensure they safely take a right turn, heading west on 65th, down the hill toward the water.

65th & 36th way finding volunteer Medium Priority

As athletes approach, heading west / down the hill on 65th, ensure they safely take a left turn and continue south on 36th.

62nd & 36th way finding volunteer Medium Priority

36th splits here, and we want to keep athletes on their right, following the arterial. So, as athletes approach, heading south on 36th, ensure they stay on the right side as the road splits, heading down the hill, and preparing to take a safe right turn on 61st.

61st into 38th - way finding volunteer Medium Priority

As athletes approach, heading south, down the hill on 36th, ensure the safely take a right turn onto 61st. Also ensure they are following rules of the road, and looking out from cars at the intersection. once they make the turn, they will go under the train crossing, and make a left turn on 38th. The 2nd volunteer will be located here to ensure they make this turn safely and prepare for the tight right turn ahead onto the Burke-Gilman trail.

South End - Burke Gilman entrance High Priority

Details

As athletes approach, coming south west on 38th, ensure they are safely slowing and making the hard right turn onto the start of the Burke-Gilman trail. the first volunteer in this location will be proactively warning athletes to slow in advance of the turn, and the second will be at the entry to the Burke-Gilman, ensuring they make it onto the trail safely, and know to keep heading south all the way until the end.

Windy road crossing (West side) High Priority

Details

Just east of the dog park, coming up the hill from the beach area, there is a Golden Gardens Dr. NW road crossing. This is an important crossing role to keep our athletes safe, as drivers are on the windy road and have limited visibility. Please inform athletes as they approach if they will need to prepare to stop, and then ensure they cross safely with your partner on the other (east) side of the road.
